Want to write your story but just can’t seem to get going? I can so relate...
When I get overwhelmed, I shut down.
§ Too much visual stimulation— I close my eyes.
§ Too many steps in a series of directions—my brain turns off.
§ Too many things to do—I start to procrastinate. (I could have another degree in the art of procrastination!)
I got so excited when I decided to launch The Lofty Quill. I went into list-making mode and began to dream. But the list got long…and then longer. And then I panicked.
A wise friend eyed my plans. “That’s your vision board. Not your all-at-once board,” she said.
I also know this about myself: I do best when I take things one step at a time.
I took one step. I began teaching Guided Memoir Writing Classes. That first step naturally spawned more steps. Over the next year, I lined up an editing internship and started some editing projects. I finished my Editing and Publishing Certificate through UCLA and my Guided Autobiography Certification through USC. I joined EFA (Editorial Freelancers Association). I joined several groups of memoir teachers and editors and began to meet with them regularly.
Real life experience showed me the services my clients wanted, and so I adapted my vision board accordingly. The possibilities began to feel really good. I got even more excited.
And then I hit a snag. The website. It was a beast unto itself, and the panic began to rise again.
Slow down, I reminded myself. One step at a time. We’re not supposed to be experts in every area, and it’s ok to get help. I took a class on putting together a website help and here I go!
If you can relate to any of the above, I’ve got a reminder for you:
§ You absolutely CAN write your story, and
§ Your story DESERVES to be told!
Let the Guided Memoir Writing process help you break your story down into manageable chunks, 2 pages at a time, and, most importantly, give you a place to start. I can help you every step of the process.
Let me help you start the story only YOU can write!
